ROTC and the Service Academies

March 5, 2011

While we are wondering about the academic bona fides of ROTC programs, we should also pay attention to criticism of the service academies.  A good place to start is with Tom Ricks, who has a terrific blog hosted by Foreign Policy called “The Best Defense.”

In April 2009, Ricks published an op-ed in The Washington Post entitled “Why We Should Get Rid of West Point.”  Among other things, it’s an argument on behalf of the superior education provided future military leaders by ROTC Programs.

On his blog in the ensuing weeks, there was a terrific, spirited argument about the relative merits of the service academies vs ROTC.  Search on his bliog for items tagged “service academies” and “education, military.”  And look especially for items posted in April 2009 and the weeks that followed.
