Today’s Treat: Chopin

September 24, 2010

Today’s special treat was a Brown Bag Concert in the Orchard Room.  We do these several times a semester on Fridays at noon.  People bring their lunch (or buy one in the Coffee Shop) and listen to someone (a member of the community or a visitor) play some music.

Today was all Chopin.  Forrest Tobey, Music Professor and Orchestra Conductor, was joined by two people who teach piano on campus to Earlham students: Pavel Polanco-Safadit and Takako Hayase.  They divided Chopin’s works into three kinds (lyrical, virtuoso and epic), and each took one.  The Orchard Room sits at the southern end of the buildings on our campus, and so has lovely views to Back Campus to the south.

“The Lyrical Chopin” by Forrest Tobey – Mazurka in A minor, 6
Preludes, Nocturne in Eb major, and Waltz in Eb major.

“The Virtuoso
Chopin” by Pavel Polanco-Safadit – 2 Etudes from Etudes for piano.

“The Epic Chopin” by Takako Hayase – Ballade No. 4 in F minor.  The
concert will be in the Orchard Room at noon.
