The editors of SBNation give Earlham football a shoutout saluting one of our more (in)famous cheers:
Fight fight inner light
Kill, Quakers, kill
Knock ’em down, beat ’em senseless
Do it ’til we reach consensus!
They ask, “Whom can we speak to about this? Can we pass a hat? What must be done to get the Quakers into D-II, into the FCS, onto national television?” As if that would be a promotion, and something we were seeking.
On the contrary. We want to be as far from professional football, as far from Division I as possible. This fall we’ll dress over 60 players each Saturday for football. That’s over 10% of the young men on campus, and others will play soccer and run cross country. We want as many of our young men and women as possible to participate in intercollegiate athletics as possible.
It’s great that there are still some students in the stands to shout “Fight, fight inner light,” but our emphasis is on participation in athletics, not on a spectacle in which a few compete and nearly everyone can only aspire to be on the sidelines.
