Higher Ed Watch (a blog from new America) had a very useful overview piece yesterday on “how much damage” “efforts to deregulate the [for profit college] industry over the past decade have caused both students and taxpayers.” It recounts the initiatives of what was once called the “career college” lobby to make it easier for for-profit colleges to register low-income students, collect the federal financial aid for which they are qualified, and serve them poorly, with little regulatory oversight.
Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY), the ranking Republican in higher education matters, has been the point person in the Congress on behalf of the for-profits. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) has championed the cause of accountability.
